Join Captain Monty Hawkins aboard The Party Boat that Fishes Like a Private Charter! That’s right–because the Morning Star “sells out” at 25 anglers for sea bass there’s plenty of room at the rail for all anglers! Each Reservation has a well-marked and numbered place at the rail that YOU can choose from when booking.

Captain Monty specializes in precision fishing of the natural, shipwreck and artificial reefs off the coast of Maryland. Sea bass, easily one of the tastiest fish in the sea, are targeted in late Spring and early Fall – sometimes in late January and February too.

Summer flounder, aka “fluke,” mix with sea bass on the reefs in July and August–even into the Fall. Other reef species are targeted in their time too. Winter tautog trips are a specialty wuith several state records being set, while blueline/golden tilefish trips are occassionally scheduled as well.

Hard-working crew, but a tough layout and slow day on the water.

The mates were absolute professionals who worked tirelessly to assist everyone on board, keep lines cleared, and manage a full boat. (Note that the mates will clean your catch for a fee on the ride back). A quick heads-up for future passengers: once the mates unhook and measure your fish, they place them straight into your cooler without dispatching them. Taking a moment to dispatch your fish right after measurement ensures a more humane end, makes the fish much easier to handle, and noticeably improves meat quality.

Unfortunately, I booked port spot 18 (and the angler next to me at 17 had a very similar experience, each walking away with just two sea bass, while at least one angler on the starboard side caught ten fish, mostly mahi). The boat was heavily crowded on the starboard side, and it became clear that the positioning of those two specific port spots simply doesn't align well with how the captain sets up and navigates the wrecks and reefs. With all stops except the first one dedicated to targeting mahi, and pretty much everyone else on the boat catching mahi and/or flounder, the results just weren't there for our section of the rail despite the captain trying to position more favorably at times. It seemed like they were well aware of the challenges with those two positions, even prior to leaving the dock, which is why I docked them 2 stars.

Great crew effort, but my recommendation to the boat would be to consider eliminating spots 17 and 18 altogether, and simply adjusting the pricing across the remaining positions to compensate.

We always have a great time on the Morning Star. The Morning Star is not a typical party boat. Each angler has plenty of room for a great fishing experience. We had a great day catching seabass. We caught 27 between two of us. The first mate Joe was amazing. He is a hard worker, very personable and helpful. Looking forward to our next trip.

Captain Monty and Mates Joe and Jason were on point, helpful, and so nice! Been on plenty of fishing boats in my lifetime, both party and charter, and the Morning Star is one of the best. No nonsense and gets you on the fish
